This is dedicated to those of you without children. I recommend taking a sabbatical BEFORE children arrive, if possible. This is why:
6:45am: Wake up (shouldn't I get to sleep until noon or something?), wish husband happy birthday.
7:15am: Wake up children.
7:45am: Feed children.
8:15am: Drive children to school.
8:40am: Fill minivan with gas.
8:50am: MUST HAVE COFFEE. Get coffee.
9:30am: Meet with graduate students in office.
10:30am: Drive to kids' school.
11:00am: Watch youngest child sing in Valentine's Day pageant (very cute).
12:00pm: Back to campus: lunch with job candidate.
1:20pm: Stop at office to pick up husband's birthday gift, forgot to grab earlier.
2:00pm: Return to school to see older child sing in Valentine's Day pageant (cute as well). Pick up younger child from classroom to watch older child.
2:30pm: Deliver younger child back to classroom for Valentine's Day party.
2:40pm: Have cookies & punch following older child's performance. Talk with older child's teacher about his classroom behavior. :(
3:30pm: Take children home.
4:00pm: Desperately clean house and fold laundry.
5:00pm: Take children to YMCA, 20 minutes away.
5:22pm: Deliver younger child to Tot Watch.
5:25pm: Deliver older child to karate.
5:30pm: Squeeze in 30 minute workout (It is SO easy to get a treadmill now that the New Year's Resolution people have cleared out.)
6:00pm: Pick up older child from karate.
6:05pm: Pick up younger child from Tot Watch.
6:30pm: Get home, desperately clean kitchen counters.
6:45pm: Begin preparing macaroni & cheese while children sort through valentine's cards.
7:00pm: Friends arrive to wish hubby a happy birthday. Their younger child immediately starts screaming.
7:05pm: Open gifts, child still screaming.
7:10pm: Still screaming.
7:30pm: Friends decide screaming child must go to bed. They go home.
7:35pm: Serve cold mac & cheese to children.
7:40pm: Microwave Lean Cuisine. Eat.
8:24pm: Write blog post.
8:30pm: Put children to bed.
8:45pm: How is there no wine in this house? I NEED SOME WINE!!!!
9:00pm: Watch TV. Must watch Lost.
10:00pm: Bed.
Exciting, huh?

LOL! So, so true. Sounds a lot like our house.
P.S. I am enjoying a lovely glass of Pinot Noir as we speak....er, type.
Funny...that feels a lot like my life off sabbatical.
Cranky, I think the only thing that differentiates us is that I don't have "teach class" on my list for the day.
And now, with a blissful two and one-half hours until my next appointment, I proofread the final draft of my paper with Velma. Yay!
That was pretty much my sabbatical experience. A bit less service and no teaching, but not really any extra time for writing (though I did travel quite a bit in furtherance of a research project...that I've still not had time to write up beyond a nearly complete article...the book is still sitting more than a year after the fact and will probably sit for another year).
