No footnotes? NO FOOTNOTES???

So, here I am, busily preparing a manuscript for publication (essentially, the same thing Velma was doing on Monday. Hence, her Endnote rant.), when I come across the following sentence in the journal's instructions to authors:

Except for author acknowledgements, (our top tier journal) publishes neither footnotes nor endnotes. Please incorporate any essential material into the text.

What? WHAT??? We have four pages of endnotes--seriously. They contain information on the validity and reliability of our measures, collinearity issues, important differences between research sites, etc. FOUR PAGES!

So, I'm stuck with one of two options: delete the footnotes and edit them dramatically into the text (which is already too long according to the guidelines) or find another outlet.

Has anyone seen this before? I'm stumped...

That blows. Pap and I just had that issue come up with a manuscript we sent out. They require an explicit discussion of hypotheses and NO ENDNOTES. We got a 'revise before review.' Thankfully we didn't have 4 pages of endnotes. I ended up just deleting them all but saved the text in case a reviewer requires more clarification. It is ridiculous, though. There is some material that just doesn't belong in the text but is necessary to give readers a complete picture of what was done.

Send me a line with the name of the journal- i am curious. I would email the editor and explain the situation. The reviewers may want to see the info in the draft and then you can work with the editor to rework them into the final manuscript. Good Luck! You are burning up the place sending out all these articles over the past month or so.

Baby, I'm a superstar!

Seriously, all this stuff is just ending at the same time. Thank God I'm not sole author on any of them.

That is crazy. I'm not sure I would take the submission elsewhere, but I'd probably give that some serious thought. The policy makes no sense to me. There are tons of technical issues (as your paper proves) that don't need to be presented to all readers in the text of the paper.

I am jealous you are getting things out. As I mentioned in another comment, I'm on my 4th ice day in 10 days at home with the kids. Plus we've all been sick. I have a manuscript that needs about 5 hours to be ready for submission and I haven't been able to find the time in the past month. Very frustrating...

I ended up deleting the footnotes and summarizing the main points in the text. Unfortunately, they do seem pretty extraneous to me in their current location. I'm just afraid I'll get slammed by the reviewers for leaving things out. We'll see.

As for my recent spurt of productivity, don't be too jealous. I'm coming off a pretty serious dry spell.
