Guest Speakers

I teach the first course in our MA/PhD sequence of classes. It is designed to introduce students to the breadth of research in criminology and criminal justice and to socialize them to the larger grad school experience. In the past, I have had guest speakers come to a few classes. In my evaluations, students asked that I broaden the range of individuals that come to class. In particular, they would like to see more practitioners be invited, so they can better understand what they can do with an MA.

I would love to hear your suggestions for speakers. In general, any information on the type of job placements made by your students would be helpful.

Great question. I'm teaching a course called Alcohol, Drugs, & Society in the fall, and am working on getting someone from FAMM to do a guest lecture for me.

Thinking back to my student days, I recall two guest speakers whose presentations I particularly enjoyed: a juvenile probation officer and a polygraph operator/interpreter(polygraph-ologist?).

I hear unemployed professors are GREAT guest speakers. Let me know if you are looking for one, I have a feeling I might have lots of free time on my hands in the coming months!

I think it would be great if you could get one of your recent grads to come back to talk about what they are doing. This especially works well if they are only a year or two out so that some of the folks in the class will know (or know of) them.

Perhaps we could take a page from the Baby-sitters Club and form a Guest Speakers Club! (Man, did I love those books when I was growing up...)
