The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has accepted a plea deal in the perjury/obstruction of justice case against him and will resign:
The deal calls for Kilpatrick to plead guilty to two felony counts of obstruction of justice by committing perjury, agreeing to serve four months in jail, pay up to $1 million in restitution, and serve five years' probation. He also agreed not to run for office during that five-year span.Stay tuned for more...
The mayor will turn over his state pension to the City of Detroit, which paid $8.4 million to settle two whistle-blower lawsuits three former cops filed against the city.
UPDATE: Woah. DPD Chief Ella Bully-Cummings has announced her immediate retirement. The plot thickens!
UPDATE: Sharon McPhail -- who went from accusing Kwame of trying to electrocute her with a chair massager while she was a City Council member to serving as Mayor Kilpatrick's general counsel -- also has announced her resignation.
Dun-dun-dun. Another one bites the dust! Here's who else the Free Press thinks is on the chopping block:
In addition to Bully-Cummings [check!] and [ex-Deputy Mayor and Kilpatrick loyalist Anthony] Adams, other appointees whose jobs would appear to be in jeopardy: John Johnson Jr., the administration's corporation counsel who has been embroiled in the text message scandal; Sharon McPhail, the mayor's general counsel and most aggressive legal advocate [check!]; Kandia Milton, the mayor's chief of staff and childhood friend, and Lawrence Hemingway, director of the Recreation Department and the mayor's Cass Tech football teammate.

FINALLY!! I really hope that Detroit takes this opportunity to make some real change in the city. We had a similar turnover in leadership about 8 years ago and it really helped. Unfortunately, I am not that optimistic in this case.
I've had it on live all morning. He was so smug during the whole thing...
UNREAL UNREAL UNREAL! What a disaster that City is. Interesting timing...To consider how politicians use/abuse public office for their own personal gain. It is so sad and disgraceful.
And he said he wants to make a comeback of sorts, didn't he? No shame.
Prediction from Chicago: Tom M. says Kwame will be back in 5 years. He is sure of it. Like you all, I just don't get it...
Well, look at Marion Barry. He was caught doing crack and spent 6 months in federal prison. He was back in the mayor's office within 4 years.
The Trailing Spouse said the exact same thing: "Mark my words, he'll be mayor again in 5 years."
Have fun in Chi-town, and tell Tom we said hello!
