Blog Action Day 2008
Welcome to the 2nd annual Blog Action Day! Blog Action Day is a grassroots effort by bloggers, podcasters, and other Internet-savvy folks to address pressing social issues. Last year's inaugural Blog Action Day focused on the protecting the environment, while the focus of this year's effort is the alleviation of poverty.
Of course, it is difficult to discuss issues related to crime -- especially urban violence and drug crimes -- without also discussing poverty, making the topic of this year's Blog Action Day particularly relevant for us. (Indeed, we've even written a bit about poverty here and here.) So, please leave a comment and share your favorite book, article, research report, documentary, website, assignment, or other resource that addresses the relationship between poverty and crime. (I'll go first to get us started.) If we get enough suggestions I will compile all of them and post them as a complete resource list in a new entry.
Thanks for participating in Blog Action Day 2008!

With respect to academic texts, Reiman's The Rich Get Richer and The Poor Get Prison is a classic. I also really like this report from the Sentencing Project about the denial of welfare benefits to women convicted of drug offenses. It's a good illustration of the linkages between race, class, and gender.
Also, I've really been enjoying the Pathways magazine, published by the Standford Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality, that I wrote about a while back. It's free, filled with articles by leading poverty and inequality scholars, and is really, really informative. You should check it out if you haven't already.
OK, your turn. What are some of your favorite poverty (or poverty and crime) resources?
hmmm... all i can think of right now are poverty sites (no crime related ones coming to mind). :(
anyway, i turn to sites like freerice, kiva, and goodsearch, as ways to help alleviate poverty online.
saw this post via the front page of blog action day. it's great that you're participating. :)
