Blerg. Two manuscript rejections in one week. Nothing like the ol' one-two punch to fuel a gal's Impostor Syndrome, eh?
Now's the time for you all to reassure me that it's all about finding the right journals for my manuscripts, and that even the most brilliant scholars have had their work unceremoniously rejected, etc, etc...
P.S. The second rejection actually was a near miss at a tier-1 journal. My paper got one strongly positive review, one strongly negative review, and one mixed review that leaned toward an R&R. Ultimately it was the editor's call to reject it, which I respect. For my first submission to a top-tier journal (using qualitative data from my dissertation, no less), I'm actually pretty pleased at how my manuscript fared, even though it was ultimately rejected.

Heck, I've chalked up two rejections in a single day. Now THAT makes you feel good about your skills and abilities.
Fortunately my dating life in high school (or lack there of) prepared me for the many rejections I have (and will) face in my professional life.
poor cranky
"Poor cranky"? How 'bout "poor Hugs"?! I'm the one in need of sympathy here!! : )
Believe me, it is Cranky that needs the sympathy...or actually Mrs. Cranky. But I digress. Hugs, the more manuscripts you submit, the more likely you are to get multiple rejections. It is the nature of the beast. I don't write enough to get multiple rejections in any given year, so I don't have this problem. I do agree that academia is the one job where one moment you feel you know everything and the next you feel like you don't know anything. Good stuff.
I found your blog by Googling the word "blerg." You were on the first page. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like an imposter. (Get rejections ALL the time.) But, I get the feeling we're too hard on ourselves. Time for a drink.
Agreed, Anon. Welcome to the blog!
