Dubious (and Disheartening) CJ Quote of the Day

"Marijuana is dangerous and has no medicinal benefit." ~ Gil Kerlikowske, Director of ONDCP (a.k.a. the nation's "Drug Czar").

"No medicinal benefit"? How can he say that with a straight face?

I guess I am not surprised at all. ONDCP is a political office as much as it is a policy office. Any office with a "Czar" as its head is not a serious policy agency. The administration will win few political points taking on this issue so they will not take it on.

I don't really know where I stand on this issue. But it strikes me as odd that morphine and other opiates are legally prescribed drugs responsible for an ever increasing number of deaths (intentional and unintential). So much so there is serious consideration for taking some off the market. Moreover, they truly are "gateway drugs" to heroin use. Yet marijuana remains illegal - even it its medicial value is unclear. Something seems strange about that. Interestingly, I just googled this topic and see that a particular policy council of the AMA supports the use of medical marijuana. Seems that should be taken into consideration. If there is real medical value to marijuana, the AMA and similar groups should take a clear stance on this to help guide this discussion.
