Detroit Northwest Precinct Shooting

On January 23rd, a man named Lamar Moore walked into the Detroit Police Department Northwest precinct and opened fire on the officers -- including the precinct commander -- seated at the desk just inside the building's front door. Four officers were injured, though thankfully none seriously so and all are expected to recover. The gunman, Moore, was killed in the shootout.

Several days after the shooting incident, DPD released security video footage of the attack, which the Detroit Free Press subsequently posted. (A probably unnecessary warning: the graphic video captures the shooting death of the gunman, so view with caution.) The video also contains a recorded introduction in which DPD Chief Ralph Godbee defends the department's decision to release the footage. (For example, among other motivations was a desire to remind the public that police officers are in mortal danger even while not on patrol.)

I'm uncertain how I feel about the video release, to be honest. I'm curious to hear what others think.

P.S.: Here is a summary of Godbee's rationale for releasing the video:
In a message that opens the video, Police Chief Ralph Godbee said the department wanted to release the surveillance video to maintain a commitment to transparency, show the public heroism by the officers along with the inherent dangers that come with police work, and for the benefit of the greater body of law enforcement.

That is some C-R-A-Z-Y stuff. Most know, I spent lots of time in several of the Precincts in Detroit. My first reaction is chalk one up for the good guys. I cannot even comprehend what happenend there. I am relatively speechless. I have no reaction to the posting - I think the posting itself is fine. Likely considered public record if ever challenged. To the situation itself, I cannot fathom it.
