Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. ... Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.

~Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? (1967)

The tough mind is sharp and penetrating, breaking through the crust of legends and myths and sifting the true from the false. The tough-minded individual is astute and discerning. He has a strong austere quality that makes for firmness of purpose and solidness of commitment.Who doubts that this toughness is one of man's greatest needs? Rarely do we find men who willingly engage in hard, solid thinking. There is an almost universal quest for easy answers and half-baked solutions. Nothing pains some people more than having to think.

~Strength to Love (1963)

One has not only a legal, but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

~Letters From a Birmingham Jail (1963)

Happy Holidays!!

Well, my lengthy blogging absence is proof of just how busy things have been at Chez Huginkiss lately. Ugh! I know this is a busy time of year for everyone, so I wanted to take a moment to check in, and to wish my fellow blogging peeps and our readers (if anyone is still reading, that is!) a restful, relaxing holiday season. Best wishes for a happy, healthy 2010!!

Happy Fat Tuesday, Part Deux!

Note: this is the exact same post from last year -- but it's just as true now as it was then! (Yes, I've already had my custard paczki this morning.)

Happy Fat Tuesday, everyone! Feel free to indulge with a paczki (or two). I've already had mine this morning (custard, my favorite)!

Emerging from the Post-Holiday Haze

I've finally emerged from the post-holiday haze to write a new blog post for the first time in what seems like ages. So... how was everyone's holiday? Ours was good, if hectic. We spent lots of time visiting with friends and family -- many from out of town -- which is what the holidays are all about. Much to my chagrin, however, this past week inolved rather extensive overeating on my part: sweet potatoes, pecan pie, and sugar cookies on Christmas, then kugel, latkes, and doughnuts a few days later at a Hanukkah party. Mmm mmm!

Did Santa/the Holiday Armadillo bring you what you asked for this year? Anyone have any exciting plans for New Year's?

Happy Holidays!

Well, things are bound to be relatively quiet here over the next few weeks as folks enjoy some time off for the winter break. Here's wishing everyone a safe, happy, and restful holiday season. Happy Hanukkah/Christmas/Kwanzaa/Festivus/Winter Solstice to you and yours from all of us here at the GBOC!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I hope all of our readers, as well as my fellow bloggers, have a safe and happy holiday weekend.

Here at the Huginkiss household, we've been preparing for tomorrow's festivities by making Thanksgiving-themed cookies, including turkeys.....

....and pilgrim hats....

Cute, eh? Hope all of you get to enjoy lots of yummy treats tomorrow, too!

Just in Time for Halloween

Last year about this time Cranks introduced me to the more-awesome-than-words-can-express website called Extreme Pumpkins. Here are some of the reasons why this website, and the accompanying book ...er, books... rock:

1. Extreme Pumpkins takes pumpkin-carving as seriously as it ought to be taken, which is to say very seriously. Even the most adept carvers will agree that the entries on this site are mind-blowing.

2. The proprietor of the Extreme Pumpkins franchise, Tom, is from metro Detroit! Represent!

3. Tom also is a good writer, and is funny. His posts crack me up.

4. There's an annual pumpkin contest! You can see the 2008 winning pumpkins here.

5. The puking pumpkin. It rules.

So, if you're looking for inspiration for your 2008 jack-o-lantern, look no further than Extreme Pumpkins. You won't be disappointed!

Happy (Very) Belated Father's Day!

Ack!  Velma is absolutely correct -- I completely spaced out on wishing a Happy Father's Day to Scooby, Dr. Cranky, ShockSpouse, The Trailing Spouse, and Velma's hubby (who, it appears, is in desperate need of a Blogger handle).  So....Happy Belated Father's Day, everyone!

8 Years of Wedded Bliss!

Patch, Scoob, and I all got married eight years ago this June. (To our respective spouses, that is. Not, you know, to each other.) It happened on successive weekends: Patch & Jill on the 3rd, Bryan & I on the 10th, and Scoob & Tracy on the 17th. Eight years -- and several kids, dogs, and cats -- later, and we're all still blissfully wed. Happy Anniversary, all!

Happy Memorial Day!

Happy Memorial Day, everyone. Hopefully you are able to enjoy a parade, cookout, or other festivities with loved ones during the long holiday weekend.

Also, on a personal note, I'd like to say a word of thanks to all of the military personnel who are risking their lives around the world, and to their families and friends who must spend this Memorial Day weekend without the people they love most in the world. For your service, sacrifice, and selflessness we honor you!

Happy Passover!

Pesach Shalom, everyone!

I know that Passover does not start until tomorrow, but I needed an excuse to post the following video as a Friday [Completely Unrelated to] CJ Funny. For your viewing pleasure, here is a great old SNL sketch in which host Jerry Seinfeld shows up as a belligerent, rude Elijah the Prophet at a family's Passover seder. Enjoy!
